New Delhi--The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas
(MoPNG) has told the Delhi Police that at least 36 documents recovered
following the leak of papers from the ministry are either “secret” or
“confidential” in nature, according to the chargesheet. This comes after
the police sent a bunch of
recovered documents to the ministry to
ascertain whether the Official Secrets Act could be slapped against the
accused. The ministry reverted by sending three reports to the police,
classifying some of the documents as either “secret” or “confidential”.
According to the chargesheet, at least 23 such documents
were recovered from former journalist and head of news website Indian
Petro Group Santanu Saikia. “It has not been specified whether documents
marked ‘secret/confidential’ are covered under the Official Secrets
Act. Further clarifications in this regard is being sought from MoPNG,”
the chargesheet states.
hief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal Monday took
cognizance of the chargesheet, which charges 13 persons, including five
corporate executives, with offences such as theft, cheating, forgery and
criminal conspiracy.
As per the chargesheet, Lalta Prasad and Rakesh Kumar were
in possession of two sets of documents marked “confidential” and three
sets of documents marked “secret”. Both Prasad and Kumar are the sons of
accused Asharam, who worked in the ministry. Six documents recovered
from Prayas Jain of Metis Business Solutions and two recovered from
Cairns India general manager K K Nayak were marked
“secret/confidential”.
Police also said the footage recovered from a CCTV camera
inside the ministry has been sent for forensic examination. Police added
that the assistance of a chartered accountant has been sought to
“further analyse” detailed bank statements of the accused persons and
companies, which will be filed through a supplementary chargesheet.
