Subject: Request for representation in protest of the incidence happened in Mumbai with our fellow lady Member
Respected President and Members of Central Council,
You all must have read about the shocking incidence of a lady member of the ICAI being abused, threatened and molested by a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, which was reported by
the newspapers in the last week.
As reported in the newspapers, the JCIT threatened to throw acid on the face of that lady member, when she refused to accede to some of his demands. After the incidence, the JCIT was, reportedly, arrested. This news got widely spread on all social medias like Facebook , Twitter, Whatsapp , Telegram etc. We are sure that this news must have been read by the Central Council members and all responsible council members working at different levels.
It is a well settled fact that United we stand, divided we fall. We, united members, expect the ICAI, as a parent body, which is also popularly known as “a partner in nation building” should take some action in such incidences to protect the interest of the members and to give them safe platform to practice with pride in the noble profession. Such actions would increase the standards of the profession and curb the practices of unnecessarily harassing the members by any of the Govt. Officials for some or the other reason.
We, the members of the ICAI working for the good corporate governance demand –
1. That the ICAI should enquire and investigate the matter further and represent the same to CBDT, Home and Finance Ministry and Commissioner of Police;
2. To follow up with the respective authorities to take punitive actions against the culprit. The matter must be referred to disciplinary committee set up by CBDT / Home Ministry/ Finance Ministry.
3. To take preventive actions in such matters and have some safety guidelines prescribed to protect the interest of the members;
This is an alarming situation where we expect our parent body ICAI, to take some stringent actions to protect the members and to help them maintain the standards dignity.
