Kolkata: A day after the West Bengal Human Rights Commission slapped a Rs 50,000 fine on the police for arresting a Jadavpur University professor who had sent out cartoons on the chief minister from his email,Mamata Banerjee tore into the judiciary on Tuesday,claiming that its orders could be procured by paying money.Speaking at a seminar organized to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Bengal legislative assembly,she said,Keno aajke takar binimoye court e bichar hobe (Why should judgment be delivered in exchange of money) Corruption has made inroads into the judiciary and democracy as a whole.

Kolkata: Accusing the judiciary of corruption,West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said,This is unfortunate.We may have won freedom but not economic freedom.
The Trinamool Congress chief was obviously aware of the consequences of her trenchant attack on the judiciary.
I am saying this in the assembly.If anyone condemns me,I will be happy.Someone can send me to jail,arrest me or accuse me of defamation.But somewhere I should express my opinion on what I am witnessing.Why many judgments are being made in exchange of money Why The judiciary will judge, she said.
Expectedly,her speech raised hackles in legal circles,with high court lawyer Subrata Mukherjee saying that the Chief Justice of the Calcutta high court should take note of the speech and act against her.However,other senior lawyers pointed out that the CM had carefully chosen the assembly to make her comments.Mamata didnt spare quasi-judicial bodies either.In an oblique reference to the rights bodys censure on cartoon row,she said,There are some commissions that summon senior officers and keep them busy for hours together.Shouldnt they have accountability too
