IRS corruption case: CA surrenders to ACB

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in
Ahmedabad received a surprise visitor on Thursday when
Chartered Accountant Sumeet Singhania surrendered himself at its office in Shahibaug. Singhania is wanted in a corruption case involving Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT) Suresh Chand Meena in Ahmedabad.
The CA was arrested on Thursday morning after he surrendered before the ACB. He had been
evading the agency's sleuths for a month. The ACB had earlier arrested his wife, CA Namita Singhania, for accepting Rs 8 lakh in bribe money from the complainant on December 15, last.

Court grants two-day remand

According to DySP D P Chudasama of ACB Ahmedabad, "Singhania was presented in court on Thursday evening and the ACB was granted two-day remand of the accused."
Additional Sessions Judge P C
Chauhan of the Ahmedabad City Sessions Court had rejected the anticipatory bail applications of Singhania and ACIT Meena on January 9.
In December, ACIT Meena, junior I-T personnel Sunil Patni, CA Singhania and his wife Namita were booked by the ACB for soliciting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a taxpayer for not opening up more of his account books as part of a scrutiny notice. After bargaining they settled for a sum of Rs 8 lakh from the taxpayer in lieu of promising to provide this illegal favour.
Namita was caught red-handed accepting bribe of Rs 8 lakh from the complainant at her residence at Dev Aurum Residency in Prahladnagar. She is currently lodged at
Sabarmati Central Jail.
ACIT absconding
Meanwhile, ACIT Meena (26), who was in December 2018 relieved of all posts and recalled to the headquarters (Ahmedabad) as Officer on Special Duty (OSD), is still absconding, besides Sunil Patni.
