Aurangabad: City-based chartered accountant Renuka Deshpande has taken
over as chairperson of the Aurangabad branch of western India regional
council (WIRC) of Institute of Chartered
Accountants of India. Deshpande
is the first woman chairperson in 30 years since the branch was
established on June 17, 1986.
She will head the branch for one year.
Speaking to mediapersons, Deshpande elaborated on the plans she has lined for to increase the number of women in the profession.
"Chartered
accountancy is one of the most challenging professions for modern women
today, but unfortunately, their numbers, when compared to men, are
quite low. I will give special attention to organising seminars and
interactive sessions for girl students and motivate them to take up
chartered accountancy as a career," she said.
There are 130 women as against 400 men registered with the Aurangabad branch.
"Although
the number of women seeking to get into the profession has taken a big
leap over the past couple of years, only 22% of the CAs in the field are
women. But the scenario is rapidly changing as about 40% to the total
students pursuing CA are girls," she said.
Speaking about how
the recent 'Make In India' campaign has opened up new opportunities for
chartered accountants, Deshpande said, "India will need many chartered
accountants as foreign investment is happening. We will take this
message to students studying in various schools in all four districts
under the Aurangabad branch."
The branch has decided to organise special events to mark International
Women's Day on March 8. "Various activities will also be held for the
development of members and students. On the social front, the branch
will create awareness among stake holders on taxation and other
financial matters. A special session on the union budget will also be
held on March 5," she said.
