Five Ways To... Stay in Tune With Your Peers

Five Ways To... Stay in Tune With Your Peers

Its an inevitable reality of the workplace. You spend a considerable part of your day interacting with colleagues and even those you dont work closely with,in your job.Its important to take them along, says Vikas Kumar. He finds out why managing relationships with your peers is actually the most crucial part of your job you could be ignoring, and how you could turn them into trusted allies in your career journey.

1 Know Your Customer

Understand the difference among your colleagues their motivations, personalities and behaviour at work. And adapt your working style for each of them. They are after all your internal customers.I have a colleague who cannot take any negative feedback in front of an audience. So I have to do that face to face, says Rituparna Chakraborty,co-founder and senior vice president at TeamLease. Many people struggle with differentiating issues from personality. So its a lot about handling personalities, she adds.

2 Add it All Up

Your peers may be your contemporaries. But thats not reason enough to take them for granted. So rule number one is: when you say something, stick by it.Its the best way to build trust and respect. When they ask you to do something and you say you will get back in an hour,do get back in an hour, says Swapnil Kamat, training consultant and CEO of Work Better Training.

3 Watch That Feedback

No matter how friendly you are with someone,it pays to be smart with your communication style and language. While giving feedback to peers, its important to be honest but its even more important to choose your words carefully.A wrong choice of words may hurt your peer.Thats a place which causes conflict, says Kamat.

4 Connect Informally

Its very useful to be comfortable with the people you are working with. You can do that in many ways, says Manoj Kothari,co-founder and principal strategist at Onio Design.I have seen that travelling together is a great way to connect with your peers, he says. There are other small occasions like tea breaks and corridor conversations that can be utilised for this.

5 Go the Extra Mile

What goes around comes around. So every time you do something extra for your peers or colleagues, they are likely to do something extra for you as well.Thats how someone really remembers you, says Kamat. And if you made any errors, they are also more likely to overlook those errors.
