24 hours to go for the Council meeting that will discuss and decide the
fate of Rs. 100cr Nagpur land deal. Well, ICAI President Jaydeep Shah
sure isn’t giving up..he is lobbying hard with fellow Council members to
let the deal go through or at the very least, he be let off the hook
for all the governance lapses. While it seems almost certain that the
Council will cancel the deal, a few issues are still up in the air:
1. If the deal is cancelled, will the builder return the Rs.10 cr odd paid to him by ICAI? If no, then will Council fix the responsibility on Jaydeep Shah and recover it from him?
2. Will the Council take action against Jaydeep for signing such a big deal without Council approval?
3. Will Mahesh Sarda Committee submit one report or will there be a dissent? The last I heard, Mahesh Sarda is doing everything possible to save Jaydeep Shah, but time may be finally up because the Council members are unlikely to buy any clean chit of Sarda, given the allegations of a backroom deal between him & Jaydeep.
An interesting sidelight – ICAI has refused to part with information under RTI Act about Nagpur land deal. The concerned CPIO in ICAI has reportedly replied to the RTI, saying that the deal is under investigation and hence information cannot be supplied at this stage. Well, even ICAI officials seem to be admitting that the deal is under the scanner!!
