Nine persons were booked for committing irregularities worth over Rs 3.4 crore over a period of four years since April 2015 at the civil supplies godown in Kalol.
The current deputy manager of
State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited’s Godhra office Suresh Vasava lodged the complaint of cheating and criminal conspiracy when three labour contractors offered him bribe of Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 as hush-up money not to interfere with godown stock. Those named in the case are former Kalol godown manager G H Parmar, suspended Kalol godown manager S K Vasava, chartered accountant of internal auditor Mehul Patel and associate, labour contractors Sunil Beldar, Mahendra Beldar and Chintan Beldar, former deputy district managers K R Deval and Lalji Maheshwari and assistant Vishal Damor.
After being offered bribe, Vasava conducted his own probe at the two godowns in Kalol and Kalol GIDC. The probe revealed that there was a deficit of 7,426 kg wheat, 1,350 kg of rice, nine quintal sugar and three tins of cottonseed. The missing stock worth over Rs 3.4 crore was of the financial year 2018-19. Suresh also told police that when he checked the physical records, he learnt that the accused had mentioned the total stock quantity of 1,626 metric tonne against the available capacity of 950 metric tonne. Thus there was negligence on the part of Parmar and Deval, the internal auditors.
Police said that earlier deputy managers committed supervisory lapse as they never conducted proper check and inspection of available stock and capacity during inspection. “If proper inspection would have been done, then the irregularities could have been unearthed,” said a police official.
Police suspect the scam may get even bigger after detailed investigation is over.
