The Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia today welcomed the appointment of Mr Andrew Mills as Second Commissioner of Taxation at the Australian Taxation Office

The Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia today welcomed the appointment of Mr Andrew Mills as Second Commissioner of Taxation at the Australian Taxation Office, replacing retired Bruce Quigley.
Institute Chief Executive Officer Lee White said Mr Mills has an excellent reputation within the taxation profession.
“Andrew will provide the ATO with valuable practical insights into the tax issues confronting the large
corporate sector.
“His appointment will also help Commissioner Chris Jordan achieve his vision for an organisation that responds quickly and effectively in its dealings with taxpayers with complex tax arrangements, while having a lighter touch for those taxpayers with less complex tax arrangements.”
Mr Mills has worked for many years as a corporate tax advisor and is a highly regarded mergers and acquisitions and restructuring specialist.
Mr White noted that Mr Mills’s appointment meant the Commissioner had now finalised his new senior management team, with Neil Olesen and Geoff Leeper also relatively new to their Second Commissioner roles.
“Cultural change in an organisation as large and complex as the ATO is an enormous challenge, particularly at a time when there is strong focus on improved efficiency within the public service and a government intent on reducing red tape,” he said.
“The Commissioner has the right hands on deck to take this forward,” he said.
Mr White also praised the contribution of Bruce Quigley, the retired Second Commissioner.
“Bruce gave many years of loyal service to the ATO and was responsible for some of the major tax initiatives implemented over the years. He became an acknowledged expert in many areas, such as indirect tax and compliance strategy.
“We wish him well and hope that he enjoys many years engaging in the various retirement pursuits he has planned,” Mr White said.
