`PROFESSIONAL ANTI-EVASION MACHINERY NEEDED FOR TAX COMPLIANCE'In the era of voluntary tax compliance, evolution of professional and tough anti-evasion machinery is essential, according to Mr M.V.S Choudary, Commissioner of Central Excise, Mangalore. Speaking at the celebration of Central Excise Day in Mangalore on Friday evening, he said tax evasion has to be combated with a more focused and serious approach. This year the audit and anti-evasion wings of the Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate have done exceedingly well in detecting substantial revenue loss and unearthing new modus operandi of the service tax evaders, he said. To ensure the performance of the department's mandated task of maximising revenue collection, it has ensured the adoption of best practices, service delivery mechanism and promotion of a simple, responsive, transparent and taxpayer friendly tax administration. "The beauty of this evolution is that it has created a climate for voluntary tax compliance and placed greater reliance on our partners in trade and industry," he said. He opined that the introduction of Goods and Services Tax in the near future will mark another significant reform in the indirect tax system in India, by amalgamating a variety of indirect taxes levies collected by the Centre and the States. This would mitigate cascading or double taxation in a major way and pave the way for a common national market. The beneficial impact of this tax is that it would apply to both goods and services and to transactions both intra-State and inter-State, Mr Choudary said. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Pratap Reddy, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), Mangalore, said the various initiatives of the Central Excise Department will help improve the financial stability of the country and also improve transparency. Mr K.C. Gupta, Commissioner of Central Excise (Appeals), Mangalore, spoke on the occasion. - www.thehindubusinessline.com
